SUMMARY:Staples Jr. Singers (support from Toshín)
DESCRIPTION:The Jr. singers are the Browns\, a family of ten who came of age in the ’60s in northeast Mississippi between the black prairie and the pines\n\n\nIt sometimes happens that a stone cold classic from a bygone era gets rediscovered. But how often does that rediscovery happen when the band is still around? And how often does it lead to a new album? That’s the surprising circumstance behind the Staples Jr. Singers’ long-awaited second album\, Searching (June 14). \nBack in 1975\, when the Staples Jr. Singers were just teenagers growing up in the small\, rural town of Aberdeen\, Mississippi\, they got to make a single record together\, one which\, because of its rarity\, became coveted by gospel soul collectors: When Do We Get Paid. They paid for the record themselves and pressed a few hundred copies\, selling most of them on their front lawn to their neighbors. \nFollowing Luaka Bop’s re-issue of When Do We Get Paid in 2022\, the Staples Jr. Singers finally had their time in the sun: The Guardian called their album “Powerful\,” The Boston Globe named it #7 Best Album of the Year\, and UNCUT (8/10) said that it was “music that deserves your attention.” And to make the response all the better\, the Staples Jrs. Singers were around to witness it. \nWho are the Staples Jr. Singers\, and why do they share a name with that other gospel group you might have heard of\, the ones who famously crossed over? \nThe Jr. singers are the Browns\, a family of ten who came of age in the ’60s in northeast Mississippi between the black prairie and the pines. Back then\, the South was desegregated on paper but not always in practice. Their parents found refuge and support in the church against the backdrop of an unwelcoming town (and nation)\, while their kids found refuge and a greater purpose in life in the music.

SUMMARY:Crash Test Dummies - 30th Anniversary God Shuffled His Feet Album Tour
DESCRIPTION:+ special guest: DAVE LOFTS\n\n\n\nCrash Test Dummies add Cork date to their mammoth 30th anniversary tour of Grammy nominated and platinum certified album ‘God Shuffled his Feet’. Lead single “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm “ Reached no.2 in the charts and the album holds a special place in the hearts of many. With several dates on the tour already sold out\, grab your tickets before it’s too late. \nThe band celebrate 30 years since the release of their 3 times-Grammy nominated and platinum certified album “God Shuffled His Feet”. \nIn 2018\, The Crash Test Dummies hit the road for the first time in 20 years with an Anniversary Tour that spanned North America. The overwhelming reception led to a 30th Anniversary Tour in 2022 for their debut release “The Ghosts That Haunt Me” that touched down in the US\, UK (including a London headline at the legendary Kentish Town Forum)\, Germany\, Austria\, the Netherlands\, Luxembourg\, and Canada. \n“Touring again was not something we’d planned on\, but surprisingly – at least to me – there are lots of people who many years later\, still want to come and hear us. The folks that are coming out to see these shows tell us their stories\, some of them very funny\, some very dark and all very personal. It’s very humbling\, being in the confidence of so many people” says lead singer-songwriter Brad Roberts\, “and it has inspired us to continue to tour and make music.”

The reinvigorated band produced an album full of the anthemic\, melodic and beautifully written songs for which they have always been loved by their fervent fanbase. \nWith Founding member Pete Wilkinson retiring form the band in 2013. John Power (guitar/vocals)\, Liam ‘Skin’ Tyson (lead guitar – also playing with Robert Plant) and Keith O’Neill (drums) were joined by former La’s member Jay Lewis on bass. \nAt the end of 2015 Cast celebrated the 20th anniversary of their classic album ‘All Change’\, with two sold out shows at the historic Liverpool Philharmonic Hall where they played the record in it’s entirety accompanied by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. \nThe bands Latest album ‘Kicking Up The Dust’ was released on 21st April 2017. The album\, Cast’s sixth studio album\, was recorded at The Motor Museum in Liverpool and was produced by resident studio legend – Alistair Groves. \nLabelled ‘The Who of the 90’s’\, Noel Gallagher once described watching Cast play live as “a religious experience.”

SUMMARY:John Spillane
DESCRIPTION:A wholly welcome return to within sight of Ballincollig Castle for the wonderful bard\, John Spillane.\n\n\nJohn Spillane is a musician\, songwriter\, performer\, recording artist\, storyteller\, poet and dreamer. Rooted in people\, place and story\, his music transports the listener and his live performances captivate audiences around the world. \nAs an artist his music appeals to listeners across many genres and generations. His vocal style has a unique almost sean-nós like quality and his performances shimmer with the magic realism that permeates many of his songs as he effortlessly flits between beautiful poetry tinged with melancholy to roguish\, irreverent humour. John has the ability to charm\, mesmerise and entertain in equal measure. \nA native of Cork\, the County he lovingly describes as “the centre of the universe” and a source of huge creative influence throughout his career. John’s music is inspired by and encapsulates Irish traditional music in its contemporary form – a reflection of Ireland today. \nA two-time Meteor Award winner for Best Folk/Trad act John is one of the most accomplished songwriters in Ireland. With an extensive back catalogue beginning with the 1997 album The Wells of the World\, his songs have been covered by Christy Moore\, Sharon Shannon\, Sean Keane and many others. \nTwelve albums later in April 2021\, John released his first independent album in 20 years\, 100 Snow White Horses. \nIn October 2022\, John released ‘In Another Light’ a career spanning album recorded live at the Right Here Right Now Festival recorded at Cork Opera House in November 2021. \nPress Quotes \n“… glorious technicolour hues that transcend linguistic boundaries; world music for a new world.” – Irish Times \n“John Spillane\, startlingly alive to the breath of nature\, is among the last of the great bards. 100 Snow White Horses is a balm to soothe sore souls…” 9/10 – Hot Press \n“John writes catchy\, heartfelt folk-pop songs with the bonus of actually meaning something.”- The Sunday Business Post \n“well-structured\, melodious folk songs that resonate with specific\, acutely observed Irish storylines.” (100 Snow White Horses\, 2021) – Tony Clayton Lea\, Sunday Business Post \n“I sing John Spillane songs everywhere I go. John has been my favourite songwriter for the past ten years.” – Christy Moore \n“Inspired by the bardic tradition\, Spillane penned his 12th album in gratitude to patronage found on the road…this is perhaps Spillane’s best set of songs since Will We Be brilliant or What? In 2001.” (100 Snow White Horses\, 2021) – Steve Cummins\, Sunday Times \n“100 Snow White Horses is a rich\, molten cauldron of emotional blissed-out balladry blessed with poetic intimacy and a collection of story-songs that begs immediate listening. A masterclass of eloquent romanticism delivered by a poet of song.” – Folk Radio UK

SUMMARY:Cork Fleischmann Symphony Orchestra with Michael McHale.
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Sibelius’ atmospheric 7th Symphony\, the romance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.21 and the majesty of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.\n\n\nCork Fleischmann Symphony Orchestra are delighted to be returning once again to Cork’s City Hall on November 23rd for what has become a highlight in our yearly programme of events. \nThis year we present Beethoven’s much loved 5th symphony\, sometimes described as his ‘Fate Symphony’ because of his famous four note opening motif\, often referred to as ‘fate knocking on the door’. \nJoining us for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21\, will be internationally renowned soloist Michael McHale. This concerto\, often called the ‘Elvira Madigan’ concerto because of its use in the Swedish film of the same name\, is a firm favourite with concert goers. \nWe will also perform Sibelius’ 7th Symphony. This work was originally styled a fantasia by the composer but later referred to as a symphony in one movement. We are very happy to be performing this work in its centenary year. \nWe hope you will join us for what promises to be an unforgettable evening of beautiful music.

SUMMARY:James Vincent McMorrow
DESCRIPTION:Live at City Hall\, Cork on Friday 29 November 2024. Final tickets available now.\n\n\nJames Vincent McMorrow \nDate: Friday 29 November 2024 \nTime: Doors 7:30pm \nLocation: Cork City Hall \nIrish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow releases his seventh studio album\, Wide open\, horses\, via Nettwerk Music Group. The album release follows the singles “Never gone\,” “Give up\,” “Call me back\,” and “Things we tell ourselves\,” and the announcement of an extensive tour across Ireland and North America. Wide Open\, Horses is a candid snapshot of everything that has brought McMorrow to this point. The album signifies a retaking of his narrative\, a freeing self-acceptance\, and a rebuilding of both his sense of self and his connection to music.James Vincent McMorrow has beckoned listeners to open their minds and hearts since his emergence in 2010. Along the way\, he gathered over 1 billion streams across an expansive catalog. Among many standouts\, “Higher Love” went BPI Gold in the UK and ARIA platinum in Australia. His cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” soundtracked the trailer for Season Six of HBO’s Game of Thrones and generated over 130 million Spotify streams on its Live At Killkenny Arts Festival version. Toppling charts\, 2016’s We Move notably debuted at #1 in Ireland. At the same time\, he lent his voice to “Hype” from Drake’s multiplatinum blockbuster Views\, “I’m In Love” from Kygo’s Cloud Nine\, and “Run Away” from dvsn’s Morning After\, among others. 2022’s surprise album The Less I Knew arrived to critical acclaim as Variance attested\, “It makes for the perfect listen in the midst of these complicated times\, brimming with emotion and candidly confronting struggle while also looking to a brighter day.” Meanwhile\, he’s sold-out tours on multiple continents\, even packing the world-famous Sydney Opera House twice. In Wide open\, horses\, McMorrow rewards audiences with remarkable openness and vulnerability. From the uncertain first performances of these songs to an unsuspecting audience\, inviting his young daughter Margot to record the heart-wrenching yet playful duet on “give Up\,” to even recording “stay Cool” in a single take\, McMorrow lays himself bare. By reclaiming his identity\, he has crafted an album that is beautifully transparent and honest.

SUMMARY:The Unthanks in Winter
DESCRIPTION:The Unthanks will release and tour In Winter; a dream-like winter fantasia\, embracing both the dark and the light!\n\n\nThe Unthanks In Winter \nWhen December draws near\, The Unthanks will release and tourIn Winter- a double-album\,gatefold\, dream-like winter fantasia\, embracing both the dark and the light in the most ritualistic ofseasons. Moving in and out of focus – like a memory – a bittersweet hymnal to our shared winterexperience. Echoes of winter tunes known throughout the western world\, mix with the traditionaland the newly written\, all passed with great care and love through The Unthanks filter. \nIn Winter is an abstract new work that captures the warmth and nostalgia of the festive season\,the chill and darkness of the winter months\, and the reflective ritualisms of the turn of the year;the end and beginning of the circle of life. You will hear what a Tyneside band playing a GermanChristmas song in the style of The Beach Boys sounds like! A Spanish carol performed by Englishfolkies through the filter of Tom Waits. A newly written tribute to the NHS. An abstract take on ACeremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten. Traditional wassails and old stories coloured with folknoir and traces of Vincent Guaraldi’s Merry Christmas Charlie Brown. In typical magpie style\, TheUnthanks collect and reimagine\, at once unique and familiar\, inspired but natural and effortless. \nIn Winter features a new sound palette for The Unthanks\, incorporating vibraphone\, clarinet andsaxophone into the core band that features vocal harmony\, piano\, violin\, double bass\, guitars and percussion. \nThe Unthanks tell stories that capture children. They make music cutting edge enoughto be BBC 6Music regulars. They can equally be found on Radios 2\, 3 and 4\, reframinghistory and drawing together the worlds of folk\, jazz\, orchestral\, electronic and rockmusic. The believability of their storytelling is admired by some of our best storytellers -Mackenzie Crook\, Elvis Costello\, Maxine Peake\, Nick Hornby\, Martin Freeman\, RobertWyatt\, Charles Hazelwood\, Ben Myers and David Mitchell\, to name a few.At the nucleus of a constantly evolving unit is the traditional upbringing of Tynesidesisters Rachel and Becky Unthank and the arrangements and writing of Barnsley composer\,pianist and producer\, Adrian McNally. \nThe Unthanks have been described as “a take on tradition that flips so effortlesslybetween jazz\, classical\, ambient and post-rock\, it makes any attempt to put a label onthem a waste of time”.Using the traditional music of the North East of England as a starting point\, the influenceof Miles Davis\, Steve Reich\, Sufjan Stevens\, Robert Wyatt\, Antony & The Johnsons\, KingCrimson and Tom Waits makes The Unthanks a unique band\, earning them a Mercury Music Prize nomination and international acclaim along the way.

SUMMARY:The White Horse Guitar Club
DESCRIPTION:An evening of joy\, story\, and song as The Horse Guitar Club brings their revelrous show of folk rock and americana to Cork City Hall\n\n\nALL SEATED SHOW\, FULL BAR & CLOAK ROOM \nWhite Horse Guitar Club will be playing a very special concert at Cork City Hall on November 30th. \n“Growing up in Cork\, the City Hall always ignited something in our hearts. It’s a place of celebration\, known for hosting iconic gigs from legendary artists like U2\, Simple Minds\, Depeche Mode\, Eric Clapton\, and Thin Lizzy. For us\, Cork City Hall is synonymous with the legend that is Rory Gallagher. The grainy footage of his 1974 tour\, playing to a packed home crowd\, is etched in our minds. \nJust like other iconic venues such as the Opera House and the Everyman\, where the White Horse Guitar Club has had some great shows\, Cork City Hall is a bucket-list venue for us. We are honored to be playing here. This venue\, a place of celebration\, was destroyed during the burning of Cork by the Black and Tans\, then rebuilt and restored\, and brought back to our city in 1932\, all paid for by the British government as a gesture of reconciliation. This hall has seen not only music legends but also sporting legends being celebrated and has been the stage for Freedom of the City ceremonies for notable figures like JFK\, Roy Keane\, and Sonia O’Sullivan. \nOn Saturday November 30th\, we’ll be keeping these memories in mind as we plan an evening of joy\, story\, song\, and celebration. We may even have some special guests joining us. \nJoin us\, The White Horse Guitar Club\, live at Cork City Hall on Saturday November 30th.”
